How the placeholder text is built
The generator uses a fixed pool of 63 words taken from the traditional Lorem Ipsum passage. It does not call a server, and it is not random: the same settings always produce the same text. Words are picked by simple arithmetic on the position, so repeating a request gives you an identical result, which is convenient when you need predictable mockups.
- Sentences are 8 to 16 words long, start with a capital letter and end with a full stop.
- Paragraphs hold 3 to 6 sentences, and the first paragraph, for example, is four sentences of 42 words in total.
- Words mode returns the number you ask for as a single run of lowercase words ending in a full stop.
- The amount is limited to whole numbers from 1 to 100. If you type a larger or smaller number, a note under the field shows the amount actually used.
- With "Start with Lorem ipsum" on, the first two words of the output are replaced with the classic opening. Switch it off and a words result begins
lorem ad velit id magnainstead.
Worked example
Choose Words, 10, with the classic start on. The output is exactly:
Lorem ipsum velit id magna in deserunt labore duis culpa.
Choose Sentences, 2, and you get two sentences of 9 and 10 words: Lorem ipsum consequat pariatur anim do veniam aute sint. followed by Labore laboris velit sunt sit dolore aliquip cillum qui consectetur.
Where Lorem Ipsum comes from
The passage is derived from a work by Cicero, De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. The standard text is a garbled excerpt: it starts in the middle of a word (the original Latin has "dolorem ipsum", and the "Lorem" opening lacks its first letters) so it reads like language without carrying meaning. It became the default dummy copy in typesetting through printers' specimen sheets and, later, page-layout software.
Practical advice
- Test with realistic lengths. The pool has short and long words, but real headlines and names vary far more. A layout that works with 42-word paragraphs may break with a single long German compound.
- Remove it before launch. Search engines index placeholder text, and a live page full of Latin looks unfinished. A quick search for "lorem" across a site finds leftovers.
- Do not use it for non-Latin typography. Latin placeholder text hides how Arabic, Devanagari or CJK scripts will wrap and space.
- If you need fake names, emails or whole records rather than prose, the mock data generator is the better fit, and the word counter can confirm the length of what you paste into a design.
